The Brief

QTS was approached by a trade client to deliver a complete warehouse labelling and identification solution for a newly racked facility in Manchester.

The project required low level barcode scanning for an articulated fork lift truck operation, clear upper beam verification for accurate put away, and a fully structured location format aligned to a new Warehouse Management System (WMS). The programme was time sensitive and had to align with a fixed go live date.

The site was already operational, meaning installation had to be carefully managed around live warehouse activity.

The Solution

QTS designed and manufactured a bespoke labelling system to support safe, efficient scanning &clear location identification across the warehouse.

  • Step beam labels positioned on the base beam to enable safe, low-level scanning
  • Clear display of all pallet locations within each bay, using level letters and colour coding to distinguish heights
  • Matching upper beam labels installed for instant visual verification during put away, reducing operational errors

Alongside the labelling, QTS structured the full warehouse location file, including aisles, pallet numbering, levels, and left- and right-hand designations, aligned with the customer’s picking flow.

Installation was carefully managed to minimise disruption, with risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) issued, aisles barriered during works, and the project completed within the planned timeframe.

The Results

The project was successfully signed off, with the warehouse now fully operational under its new WMS. The structured labelling system now supports low level barcode scanning while providing clear upper beam verification during put away. This combination improves accuracy, reduces the risk of operational error, and helps warehouse teams work more efficiently day to day.

The system also creates a scalable identification framework that can grow alongside the operation as the warehouse develops. From initial design through to installation, the complete solution was delivered in approximately three weeks, fully aligned with the planned go-live date.
