Case Study: The Storage Equipment Centre
5 November 2011
The Challenge
Storage of lightweight and unusual shaped products was the challenge facing The Storage Equipment Centre (SEC) Ltd during a recent warehouse extension project for a leading manufacturer of plastic components. The project entailed a new storage solution capable of not only storing the 11,000 different products safely, but also increasing the effectiveness of the fire prevention system.
An outlined specification was devised which included a bespoke package of wire mesh decking, shelf dividers and an anti-collapse system. The solutions had to be both compatible with the proposed 4 tier racking structure and versatile to accommodate future product ranges.
The Solution
Utilising QTS' expertise in bespoke design and manufacturing, the QTS team quickly developed a complete project package which assisted in delivering a successful project for SEC.
Listening to the SEC team the easySHELF light was chosen as the best deck for the project. Designed specifically for lighter duty applications, the low loading mesh deck provided a perfect balance between creating a high strength durable platform whilst being a cost-effective solution. To meet the stringent fire regulations, a 50 x 100mm mesh was chosen to allow a 70% open area for water to penetrate lower levels in the event of a fire.
To help with separating the 11,000 types of plastics components in the picking areas, QTS also designed and manufactured a series of bespoke easyDIVDERS. Individually tailored to the corresponding easySHELF, the simple clip on divider defines product areas to aid in quicker product identification and a decrease in pick times.
To complete the project and maximise fire protection, Rack Guardian Anti-collapse system was supplied direct from stock to prevent dislodged goods falling or blocking the inbuilt flu in the shelf design, and providing a safe environment for pedestrians.
The End Result
QTS' involvement assisted SEC in achieving the overall goal of the project of increasing storage capacity for the end-user on time and on budget. Utilising the easySHELF wire mesh decking system allowed the extension space to be fully maximized to meet the end users exact operational and future growth requirements whilst creating a safe and pleasant working environment for their staff.
“QTS were able to aid in developing the exact specification that was required for our client. Their price, support and ability to supply the anti-collapse mesh, decks and shelf dividers enabled us to give the high level of service our clients come to expect.” – Adrian Wilcox, Contracts Manager.
